Aptana released a beta of the iPhone Development Plugin for its Aptana IDE, an open-source development environment for building Ajax apps in JavaScript. Apple has stated that the mobile version of the Safari browser in the iPhone will not support Java or Flash apps, and as yet no iPhone SDK is available, making Ajax-style development the only option for third party developers.
The iPhone Plugin lets you preview how your code will run when deployed to the iPhone's rotatable screen. The plugin makes it easy to import existing Ajax libraries and also includes starter Project files to speed up development. This is still a beta version and new features are scheduled to be added later, including an export wizard, integrated content assist for iPhone-specific APIs, and related help docs. The Aptana IDE is available for Mac and Windows, and as an Eclipse plug-in.
